Do-it-yourself sake kasu mask

I don't drink sake. In fact, I don't really drink any alcohol at all. Why?
A) the stuff doesn't agree with me, and
B) it ages your skin so fast that most of the time you don't even notice you're all shriveled up and splotchy until it's after the fact.

So why am I interested in sake?

Sake is made by fermenting rice. When sake is all done and ready, there's plenty of strange smelling and doughy-looking gunk left over.

Sake robione jest przez fermentacje ryzu. Kiedy napitek jest juz gotowy, pozostalosci z fermentacji tego ryzu rowniez sa gotowe. Wygladaja troche ciastowato i pachna troche dziwnie.

That gunk is called sake kasu (a.k.a. lees from sake production), and in Japan, where nothing ever seems to go to waste, it has plenty of uses, mainly in the kitchen. It's loaded with nutrients, and supposedly, very good for you.

It also happens to be very good for your skin.

Yep, sake kasu is the mother of all rice ferments, albeit in a solid form.

Just as sake has a few different grades, the same can be said about sake kasu.
Depending on the grade, kasu can differ in color, texture, consistency, and also, the trace amounts of alcohol still in it. Low grade kasu is full of alcohol, and while useable in the kitchen (alcohol evaporates during cooking), it's not really good (or can be even harmful) for your skin.

Why am I telling you all this?

Because SK-II is expensive (and my skin doesn't like its treatment essence). And My Beauty Diary sake masks are hard to find (and my skin likes them very much).

To remedy this situation, I decided to do what many Japanese women do. I went straight to the source and got me a bag of kasu directly from a sake brewery.

Choosing a brewery is important.
You want people who know their sake. You want people who are famous for their sake. Or at least, you want people who make sake in a place famous for its sake.
We decided on a brewery in Fukui prefecture. And yes, Fukui prefecture is famous for its sake.

Some breweries are very aware of the fact that women use sake kasu for skincare purposes, and some don't give a fark.
You want an aware brewery, because such kasu will be of higher grade and with the least amount of residual alcohol possible. Some breweries even offer ready-made sake kasu face packs. The brewery we ordered from was one such place.

My kasu arrived in a 2 kilogram bag, and of course I did take photos. Lots of them. I swear I did. I just managed to reformat the memory card before transferring all of them onto my computer. Yes, I'm very lucky that stupidity isn't a painful affliction.

On the internet, you can find many different skincare recipes for sake kasu.
I decided to go with the most basic one:

Blend some kasu with purified water.
Spread on your face.
Wait for 20 minutes, or so.
Wash off.
All done.

I recommend using a blender.

You can do it by hand, but it can be a tedious process.

Kasu smells exactly the same as SK-II's Treatment Essence. I know that some (many) women can't stand that smell. It's been compared to urine, among many other things.

30 grams of kasu is almost too much for a single use face mask. I'd recommend 20 grams.

To remedy this situation, because no one wants to keep on their face for 20 minutes something that smells like piss, you can substitute the water (or part of it) with aloe juice, or yogurt.

Aby pozbyc sie tego moczowatego zapachu, bo nie kazdy ma ochote wachac siki przez 20 minut, mozna zamiec wode (lub czesc wody) na sok z aloesu lub jogurt.

I didn't mind the pissy smell. What I did mind was the herculean task of blending this stuff. To make my life easier and at the same time pack the mask with some extra nutrients, I decided to add honey to the kasu/ purified water mix. And then, almost as an afterthought, a few drops of tomato seed oil, as well.

Tomato seed oil is supposed to be a powerhouse of all things good for your skin. It's claimed to be so good it should make you look younger in mere seconds. Or somesuch.

It didn't make me younger. Sadly. But what it did was change the consistency of the mixture just enough to make it more comfortable to use.

After blending. You can blend until your mask is perfectly smooth. I'm too impatient for that.

My mask wasn't runny (a common complaint if you add too much liquid), but if yours is, here is an easy way to fix it.
Are you familiar with the dry, compressed sheet mask capsules? The type that is intended for a do-it-yourself mask with a treatment liquid of your own choosing?

Moja maska nie byla za bardzo wodnista (to czesty problem jesli doda sie za duzo wody), ale jest twoja jest, to mozna to bardzo latwo naprawic bez dodawania ekstra kasu.

This is what you can do - take a capsule, rehydrate it just enough to unfold it, and put it on your sake kasu'ed face. Problem solved.

Wiec co zrobic? Wziac taka kapsulke, nawodnic ja tylko na tyle, zeby sie rozlozyla i wsadzic plachte na sake-ukasowana twarz. Nie ma problema.

When I washed my face after using the honey and tomato seed oil enhanced recipe for the first time, I couldn't quite believe my eyes.
My face was uniform in color, clear, luminous and very, very pale.

I've been playing around with various sake kasu face pack recipes, but this one, with honey and tomato seed oil, seems to be the most effective for my skin.
I use it weekly.
Since the start of my sake kasu experiments, I have had no major breakout episodes. My skin is ridiculously clear. Apart from stubborn redness around my nose (it's allergy season and I blow my nose a gazillion times a day), my skin looks really good and really healthy. Even my pores appear somehow smaller. The immediate results last for about a day. The extreme paleness effect is very temporary, which is a pity, and disappears within a couple of hours.

The extra paper mask keeps the kasu in place and makes life a lot easier.

What stays, however, is the incredibly clear and fresh looking skin.

In conclusion, this do-it-yourself sake kasu mask does everything that I expected, but didn't get, from SK-II Facial Treatment Essence.

I'll continue to experiment with different ingredients and brands of kasu and plan to post relevant updates in the future.

And she appeared genuinely surprised that there were people in this country who did not own a single SK-II skincare product. Travesty!

I was immediately determined to correct that mistake. Right after that lesson I hopped over to the department store frequented by the fancy people of this world, and got me a big bottle of SK-II Facial Treatment Essence. Paying for it, I realized that we'd have to eat nothing but rice with nori for the rest of the month. But what the heck. Amazing skin required sacrifices.

The first week of my very expensive Pitera™ ridiculousness I observed no results. The second week my skin started to look amazing. The third week I got the motherlode of all breakouts. Zitness galore.
I stopped using the essence and my skin cleared up.

I started using the essence again. What happened that time? See above.
Yes, exactly the same.

Yet reading all the wonderful testimonials on them innernets about "This Essence saved my skin!" and "It cleared up my acne" and "Newly proven. Your Crystal Clear Skin can last 10, 20, 30 years from now" I was sure the hideous breakouts were my fault, not the essence's. Surely, this magic potion couldn't be to blame.

I suffered through not one, not two, but three, yes 3 bottles of this bloody, farking facial treatment before I regained the ability to think clearly. I stopped using the essence, my skin gradually improved and Mrs Fancy Lawyer number 2 got pregnant and very hormonal, and her skin started to look awful. Yet another proof that the universe will always balance itself out..

But my unhealthy fascination with the SK-II brand remained.

I meczylam sie tak nie przez 1 butelke, nie przez 2, ale przez 3 (tak trzy) butle tego specyfiku zanim w koncu doszlam do siebie. Odstawilam esencje i moja cera wrocila do normy.
Pani Ekskluzywny Prawnik numer 2 w miedzyczasie zaszla w ciaze i cera jej sie zfajdaczyla. Rownowaga we wszechswiecie zostala zachowana.

Ale moja niezdrowa fascynacja z SK-II zostala.

The Wrinkle Specialist was garbage. Sorry, there are no other words to describe it. I did a side by side test with Estee Lauder Advanced Time Zone, and after 4 weeks I had to stop, because my face was starting to look ridiculous. I breathed a sigh of relief when I finally managed to use it all up.

Now, these two guys, SK-II Stempower Rich Cream and Cellumination Deep Surge EX were hard to peg. I had used samples of "regular" Stempower and I liked how it kept my skin moist and supple.
A "rich" version should be twice as good, right? Wrong. I don't know what I was thinking. There must have been some really great stuff as a GWP, because obviously, I bought the rich version instead of just "stempower".

SK-II Wrinkle Specialist byl monumentalna strata kasy. Nie wiem jak inaczej to okreslic pozostajac w granicach przyzwoitosci. Robilam sobie test - na pol twarzy Wrinkle Specialist, na druga polowe Estee Lauder Advanced Time Zone. Po czterech tygodniach musialam przestac, bo wygladalo to tak, jakby cos powaznego mi sie na twarzy przytrafilo. Zuzylam go w koncu smarujac inne czesci ciala i odetchnelam z ulga, kiedy sie skonczyl.

Ci tutaj zawodnicy, SK-II Stempower Rich Cream i Cellumination Deep Surge EX, to tak szczerze mowiac, mnie troche wkurzaja.
Mialam miniaturki "normalnego" Stempower kremu i bardzo mi sie podobablo jak pieknie nawilzal moja twarz i jak jedrnie i zdrowo moja cera wygladala.
Wiec wersja "rich" powinna byc dwa razy lepsza, czyz nie? Nie. Nie mam pojecia co mi chodzilo po glowie, kiedy kupowalam ten Stempower Rich Cream. Pewnie rozdawali jakis mega upominek z zakupem, bo jak widac, kupilam wersje "rich" zamiast normalnej.

First impressions? I hated it. I hated it so much that I stopped using it and I would have probably forgotten all about it, but then winter came. And my skin got really dry.
I gave SK-II Stempower Rich Cream another chance.

And boy, am I glad I did. Now I finally understand why this cream is so highly rated in the anti-aging category by just about every beautinista on the planet.
Make no mistake, this is serious moisture and serious recovery for dry and very dry skin only.

I chwala mi za to! Teraz w koncu rozumiem dlaczego ten krem jest KWC w kategorii anti-aging dla niemal kazdej kosmetycznej snobki na tym swiecie (albo przynajmniej poza Europa, bo cos mi sie zdaje, ze tam szal SK-II jeszcze nie dotarl).
To powazne nawilzanie i regeneracja dla suchej i bardzo suchej cery.

It's ridiculously thick and even more ridiculously rich. Nighttime use only for this baby. And voila! You wake up to baby soft, perfectly moisturized, rejuvenated skin.

I just finished the jar you see in the photo above and even though I have a box full of Korean magic creams, I am seriously considering buying this Stempower Rich Cream again. But that just shows you how monumentally stupid I am. There are tons of other products with Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate out there that don't cost and arm and a leg and a firstborn. Or at least a kidney.

I must have been brain dead when I bought it. Out of all the ridiculously expensive creams and potions out there, I chose this. Unbelievable. I immediately hated it and I still hate it.

Zaczelam sie tym smarowac i natychmiast znienawidzilam. I nienawidze do tej pory.
Zuzywam (bo tyle kosztowalo, ze szkoda wywalic), ale opornie mi to idzie.

It's an opalescent gel-like substance that leaves a very uncomfortable, siliconey feeling on the skin. Yes, it absorbs into the skin, but even after that, you can still feel it.
Don't get me wrong, it's not a liquid plastic feeling (here the top prize goes to Shiseido's Ultimune), it's more like an annoying sensation you get after slathering on a layer of cheap drugstore moisturizer.

SK-II Cellumination Deep Surge EX is supposed to hydrate your skin, even out your skin tone and make it look all luminous and wonderful.
Did it do any of the above for me?
No. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Nada.

But, unlike SK-II Facial Treatment Essence, at least it didn't break me out.

Nie jest to uczucie plynnego plastiku (tutaj kroluje Shiseidowskie Ultimune). Raczej jak wysmarowanie sie gruba warstwa taniego moisturizera z drogerii. Tyle, ze ten z drogerii bedzie siedzial na skorze i jelczal, a SK-II sie ladnie wchlonie. Ale wrazenie na skorze niemal takie samo.

Cellumination ma za zadanie nawilzac cere, wyrownywac jej koloryt i nadawac blasku.
Czy zrobilo cos z tych rzeczy u mnie?
Zupelnie nie. Zero. Nic.

Ale przynajmniej, majac w pamieci Facial Treatment Essence, nie spowodowalo wypryskowej bonanzy.
Jak na SK-II przystalo, glowny skladnik to Pitera™. Mozna sobie o nim poczytac tutaj.

My final thoughts? Unless you have plenty of money to blow, don't buy. It ain't worth it. At least not the white one. The red one, yeah, it's great, but only if you have dry or very dry skin.

Koncowe przemyslenia?
Nie kupuj, nie warto. Przynajmniej nie tego bialego. Ten czerwony, fakt, jest dobry. Ale tylko jesli masz sucha lub bardzo sucha cere. I kupe kasy na zbyciu.

The scariest part is that I will probably buy SK-II something or another in the future, because, I don't know... I just can't help myself.

A najgorsze z tego wszystkiego jest to, ze predzej czy pozniej na pewno kupie kolejny kosmetyk SK-II, bo... no wlasnie... nie moge sie powstrzymac.

My primers and bases

Primers and makeup bases can be as controversial a topic as sunblocks. Why? Many women consider them to be unnecessary and redundant. Clearly, those women are not Asian, or have never lived in Asia.

In Asia makeup bases are an essential part of any makeup routine. There are several reasons for this. The most important is that Asian foundations are formulated to be used with a primer. 
Another reason is the climate. When it's ridiculously hot and humid during summer any foundation applied without a proper base is going to smudge, smear and disappear dripping down your face.

Many sunblocks double as makeup bases. I have tried this two-steps-in-one solution and unfortunately, it didn't work for me. And no surprise, as I have totally different expectations from sunblocks and primers.

(Yes, I know that technically primers and bases are somewhat different, but for clarity's sake, I will use these terms interchangeably). 

Primery i bazy sa tak samo kontrowersyjnym tematem jak filtry UV. Dlaczego? Wiele kobiet uwaza je za calkowicie zbedne.
Jestem pewna, ze te kobiety to nie Azjatki, lub nigdy w Azji nie mieszkaly. Lub nie mieszkaly tam, gdzie panuja ekstremalne klimaty.

W Azji baza to nieodlaczna czesc makijazu (o czym kazda przyjezdna bardzo szybko przekonuje sie na wlasnej skorze, a raczej twarzy). Powodow jest klika.
Azjatyckie podklady formulowane sa z mysla, ze beda uzywane w tandemie z baza. Drugi powod to juz wspomniany klimat. Kiedy jest upiornie goraco, a wilgotnosc powietrza siega 99%, makijaz bez primera mija sie z celem. Po prostu splynie z twarzy.

Wiele filtrow dubluje jako bazy pod makijaz. Probowalam tego 2-w-1 rozwiazania i jest ono nie dla mnie. Mam inne oczekiwania jesli chodzi o filtry, a inne od baz pod makijaz.

(Tak, wiem, ze technicznie baza i primer roznia sie nieznacznie od siebie, ale dla latwosci, bede uzywac tych slow zamiennie).

My quest to find the perfect makeup base started with Shiseido Maquillage brand and its BB Base cream (not pictured, all used up). The name is very unfortunate, because despite the word "Base", it was clearly a BB cream. 

(Yes, BB creams and CC creams are considered to be bases over here.)

And naturally, what happened next was me wearing the base alone, because it offered just the right amount of natural coverage without being overly wet and dewy (as many BB creams tend to be).

Najgorsze jest to, ze nadal chce wiecej!

Moja misja znalezienia idealnej bazy zaczela sie od shiseidowskiej marki Maquillage i ich BB Base kremu (nie ma na zdjeciu, juz dawno zuzyty). Nazwa jest bardzo niefortunna, bo pomimo slowa "Base", byl to swietny krem BB. Chyba jeden z lepszych na drogeryjnym rynku japonskim.

(Tak, kremy BB i CC sa uzwazne jako bazy tutaj).

I oczywiscie, zamiast jako baza, nosilam ten krem solo. Mial super delikatne krycie, swietnie wyrownywal koloryt cery i ladnie nawilzal. Nie swiecil sie (bo byl baza), nie byl dewy, wygladal calkowicie naturalnie.
Jako krem BB z czystym sumieniem polecam.

So what am I using right now?

First one on the left is the famous Smart Skin CC cream from Albion, color 00:

Pierwszy od lewej jest Albion Smart Skin, w odcieniu 00:

It was ridiculously expensive (that tube was the equivalent of about US$50), and worth every penny. If I had to compare it to a car, it would be a Toyota Land Cruiser. Solid, dependable, indispensable in harsh conditions. There are four shades available and I am seriously considering getting 01 as well. 
The 00 works as a highlighter as well. Or rather - illuminator, because it's not shiny at all.

In the rest of Asia Smart Skin is sold as a CC cream. In Japan, it's simply a makeup base.

Good: see above. In addition it fills and minimizes wrinkles preparing a perfect surface for any foundation, it does not break me out, it doesn't dry out my skin.

Bad: expensive, minimal color correction.


Byl cholernie drogi, ta tubeczka to w przeliczeniu ponad 50 dolarow, i wart kazdego centa. Jesli mialabym go porownac do samochodu, to bylby on Toyota Land Cruiser. Solidny, sprawdzony, niezastapiony w ekstremalnych i nie tylko warunkach. Jest dostepny w czterech odcieniach i chce kupic kolor 01.
W Azji Smart Skin sprzedawany jest jako krem CC. W Japonii jako baza.

Plusy: powyzej. Wypelnia i wygladza zmarszczki i produkuje piekna powierzchnie do aplikacji podkladu. Po Smart Skinie podklad nie wchodzi w zmarchy, bo nie ma gdzie wchodzic. Zero wysypu, zero wysuszenia.

Minusy: cholernie drogi. Odcien 00 daje minimalna korekte koloru.



Next we have Clear Beauty Care and Control Cream from SK-II:

I will not repurchase this product, that's for sure.

A more ambitious company would rename it as a bb cream, start a massive advertising campaign and laugh all the way to the bank. But not Chacott. 
This must be the most under appreciated Japanese make up brand ever. And it's a pity, because their products are affordable and excellent. 

This base is no exception. It was formulated with performers in mind, and if you need a flawless base that will stay on forever and yet won't damage your skin with prolonged use in harsh conditions, this is it.

And the best part? It's tinted, so it can be worn on its own. Just like a BB cream, it evens out your skin tone and gives a perfect, satiny finish.

Good: see above
Bad: available in only one shade.

Bardziej ambitna firma nazwalaby to kremem BB, zorganizowala wielka akcje reklamowa i patrzyla jak konto w banku rosnie. Ale nie Chacott.
To chyba najbardziej niedoceniana marka kosmetyczna na rynku japonskim. A szkoda, bo ich produkty sa przystepne cenowo i dobrej jakosci.

Ta baza to dobry przyklad. Zostala sformulowana z mysla o artystach, aktorach i innych, ktorzy potrzebuja nosic makijaz codziennie i wygladac dobrze. Trwalosc jest nie do pokonania, nie zniszczy skory, pozwala skorze oddychac, trzyma sie w kazdych warunkach.

A najlepsze? Ma kolor, wiec mozna ja nosic solo. Tak jak krem BB (bo to krem BB pod inna nazwa), wyrownuje koloryt skory i daje piekne, satynowe wykonczenie. Nie swieci sie, nie ma mokrego efektu.

Plusy: powyzej
Minusy: dostepny jest tylko jeden odcien.



I'm a huge fan of Koh Gen Do, so of course I must have at least one of their bases:

Jestem wielka fanka Koh Gen Do, wiec nie dziwota, ze mam ich baze:

I like this base not so much for its priming properties, but for the beautiful velvety finish it creates on my face. And as my face is perpetually pink with splotches of yellow hyperpigmentation, this base takes care of the pink problem very nicely. It's also very moisturizing and thus ideal for dry, sensitive skin.

Koh Gen Do is very proud of its plant extracts based formulations and this base is no exception.

Good points: see above
Bad: low SPF, expensive

Lubie ja nie tyle jako primer, ale za to co robi z maja cera. Moja twarz jest niemal zawsze rozowa, i ma placki zoltych przebarwien. Ta baza niweluje rozowosc, wiec nie wygladam jakbym pila od samego rana. W dodatku swietnie nawilza, wiec jest idealna dla suchej i wrazliwej cery.

Koh Gen Do chwali sie, ze ich produkty robione sa na wyciagach z ekstraktow roslinnych bez benow, perfumow, syntetycznych barwnikow, etc. Wrazliwce beda zadowolone.

And now, my all around winner in the primer category - Dr. Ci:Labo CC Cream:

It's a CC cream for those who want SK-II but can't afford it. It does everything the SK-II base does for 1/3 of its price.

When I was in Hokkaido and found myself with a cushion foundation but without a base, a quick trip to the drugstore was necessary. I didn't feel like trying something new, so I got another tube of this CC cream. I trust it that much.

Good: see above
Bad: only one shade available

To jest krem CC dla tych, ktorzy nie moga sobie pozwolic na baze z SK-II. Robi wszystko to samo co SK-II, tyle ze za 1/3 ceny.

Kiedy bylam w Hokkaido i okazalo sie, ze zabralam podklad w poduszce, ale nie baze, trzeba bylo gnac do drogerii. Nie chcialo mi sie cudowac z nowosciami, wiec kupilam kolejna tubke tego kremu CC. Bo nie zawodzi.

I got it two weeks ago, so it's still too soon to review it. Our first week together was very complicated. All I can say now is that it will be an excellent base during our cold and dry season - it's very velvety and moisturizing. 
I think it's no coincidence that it was released last month, right before winter.

It was affordable, 2300 yen plus tax for this tube. And if it turns out as great as Dr. Ci:Labo CC Cream, then I can say I found my favorite everyday affordable primers for both summer and winter.

Kupilam to dwa tygodnie temu, wiec na recenzje jest za wczesnie. Pierwszy tydzien razem byl bardzo burzliwy. Teraz jest lepiej.
Na razie moge powiedziec, ze swietnie nawilza i bedzie idealna baza na suche, zimne miesiace. To nie przypadek, ze weszla na rynek na jesieni, zaraz przed zima.

Cenowo przystepna, ta tubka byla 2300 jenow plus podatek. Jesli bedzie tak wszechstronna jak Dr. Ci:Labo CC Cream, to byc moze bede moga powiedziec, ze znalazlam swoje bazy idealne (dla twarzy  i dla portfela) na obie pory roku.

Rozmyslalam przez kilka dobrych tygodni, co by tu napisac o tym SK-II Clear Beauty Care and Control kremie. To bez watpienia bardzo solidny kosmetyk. Ale czy jest wart swojej ceny?

Wiem, ze niektore czytelniczyki tego bloga uwazaja bazy i primery pod makijaz jako zbedne (calkowicie, lub czesciowo) i twierdza, ze na dluzsza mete przynosza one wiecej szkody niz korzysci. To oczywiscie bzdura. I mysle, ze wynika ona z bardoz prostego nieporozumienia co jest baza / primerem. Dla ulatwienia bede uzywac tych okreslen - baza lub primer, zamiennie, choc tak, wiem, ze to nie w 100% to samo.

I know that some readers of this blog tend to think that makeup primers and bases are frivolous items that, in the long run, cause more harm than good. That's rubbish, of course. And I think it stems from a simple misunderstanding of what constitutes a makeup base / primer. For clarity's sake, I will be using these two terms interchangeably, but yes, I do know, they are not 100% truly the same.


Zachodnie swiezynki w Japonii bardzo czesto przezywaja szok w drogerii, kiedy nagle dowiaduja sie, ze kremy BB i CC uwazane sa tutaj za bazy. Tak, prawda, bazy z wlasciwosciami pielegnacyjnymi, ale  nadal bazy. Nawet wiele (jesli nie wiekszosc) filtrow rowniez dubluje jako bazy pod makijaz.

To the shock and horror of many a freshly arrived western gal in Asia (Japan), BB creams and CC creams are considered makeup bases here. True, makeup bases with minimal skincare properties, but bases nonetheless. Even many sunblocks double as makeup primers.

Wiec jesli uzywasz azjatyckiego filtra, niespodzianka! Szanse sa, ze gorliwie sobie na twarzycze rozprowadzasz baze pod makijaz kazdego poranka i nawet o tym nie wiesz.
I jesli smarujesz sie jakims tam kremem BB lub CC (mam na mysli te azjatyckie i te z wyzszej polki zachodniej, bo na innych sie nie znam) i piejesz z zachwytu nad jego wlasciwosciami pielegnujacymi, przestan wiec mowic, ze nie uzywasz bazy. Bo uzywasz.

So if you're using an Asian sunscreen product, surprise! Chances are you're using a makeup base and don't even know it.

So if you're smearing some sort of BB cream (or CC cream) on your face every morning, thinking it's "cream" and gushing over its wonderful caring effect on your skin, stop spouting nonsense that you're not using a makeup primer. Because you are.

Babki pytaly sie, czy ten Clear Beauty Care and Control to moisturizer, czy moze CC krem, czy moze cos innego i jak to to uzywac. I do znudzenia powtarzana odpowiedzia bylo to: "To jest baza pod makijaz. Czy to wystarczajace wyjasnienie na Twoje pytanie?".

Wiec jesli nie jestes pewna, co jest, albo co nie jest baza (primerem), spoko, wiele kobiet ma ten sam dylemat. Nawet Azjatki swirujace na punkcie kosmetykow tez nie sa pewne.

This confusion was very apparent when reading the comments regarding the new addition to the SK-II Color family on the SK-II Singapore Facebook page. Ladies were asking whether SK-II Clear Beauty Care & Control cream was a moisturizer, CC cream, and how to use it. And the exasperated answer most frequently given was "It's a makeup base. Does that answer your question?"

So if you're not quite sure what can, or can't, be a makeup primer, don't worry, you're not alone. Even Asian cosme-obsessed women aren't so sure, either.

Wine za to mozna zwalic na geniuszy marketingowych w SK-II. Bo jesli nazwiesz dany produkt "kremem" i zachwalasz jego wlasciwosci nawilzajace i pielegnujace, to oczywiste, ze kobiety, szczegolnie te zbyt leniwe aby, lub nie potrafiace, przeczytac informacji na opakowaniu, beda przekonane, ze dostaja moisturizer, albo krem do twarzy. I przy swietnej (jak na SK-II w kazdym razie) cenie w okolicy 6000 jenow (okolo 60 amerykanskich, lub 88 singapurskich) za tubke (plus VAT), mysla sobie, ze trafila im sie super okazja.

Part of the blame for this goes straight to the marketing geniuses at SK-II. If you name a product "cream" and tout its moisturizing and caring benefits, it's only natural that consumers, especially those too lazy or unable to read the info on the packaging, will think they are getting a moisturizer, or a face cream. And at the bargain (for SK-II, anyway) price of about 6000 yen (about 60 US dollars, or 88 Singapore $) plus tax per tube, they think they've scored a sweet deal.

Ale wlasne to cena powinna byc pierwszym alarmem, ze cos jest nie tak. Bo to za tanio za pelnowymiarowe opakowanie kremu SK-II.
Druga wskazowka jest opakowanie i slowo "color" na nim. Bo tak. Ten "krem" to czesc nowej serii kosmetykow kolorowych od SK-II. ("Nowej" jest tu okresleniem wzglednym, bo nie wszedzie sa one dostepne).

Yet the price should be the first giveaway. It's too cheap to be an SK-II face cream.
The second giveaway is the packaging and the word "color" on it. Yes, this "cream" is part of the new SK-II color cosmetics series.

A skoro juz o opakowaniu mowa...
Nie ma pompki? No cos ty, SK-II? Tak na powaznie?
No ja wiem, ze za tradycyjni jestescie na taka innowacje. Przezyje.
No ale nie ma zamkniecia na "click"? No cos ty, SK-II? Na powaznie?

Ja rozumiem, ze chcecie wycisnac kazdy gorsz zysku z produktu i g*wno was obchodzi podstawowa higiena (hello, pompka!), albo wygoda (hello, zamkniecie na "click"), bo to problemy waszych klientek. Ale wiecie co? Zamkniecie na "click" to standard w wiekszosci rozwinietych krajow teraz, w XXI wieku. Ja wiem, ze japonskie firmy sa zadziwiajaco do tylu w tym temacie, ale wy jestescie luksusowa firma sprzedajaca luksusowe kosmetyki. Powinno wam przyjsc do glowy, ze wygodne rozwiazania sa, po prostu, wygodne.

No pump dispenser? Really SK-II? Are you serious???
Ok, so you're too traditional for that, OK, I can live with that. 
But no "click" top tube? Really SK-II? Are you serious???

I understand you want to maximize your profits and don't give a hoot about basic hygiene and product contamination (hello, pump dispensers!) or convenience (hello, click caps!), after all, it's your customers' problem, but a click top closure in most of the developed world is standard now that we're in the 21st century. I know you are a Japanese company, and Japanese companies are stupefyingly backwards when it comes to click top tubes, but you are also a luxury company selling luxury skin care. You should be able to afford such a simple, convenient solution.

The company refuses to call it "CC cream", but that's exactly what it is. Maybe they think that jumping on the BB/ CC cream bandwagon cheapens its image? I don't know...

Wiec mamy tu sobie ta piekna czerwona tubke wypelniona pieknym kremem CC, ktory posiada rowniez filter SPF25 PA+++. Nie jest najwyzszy, ale od bidy ujdzie.
Firma zachwala cudowne wlasciwosci pielegnujace tego kremu. Nawilza. Daje cale 12 godzin nawilzenia. Uzywany regularnie poprawi przejrzystosc cery i jej ogolny wyglad, miekkosc i nawilzenie. Ma nadac cerze blasku. Ma wyrownac odcien cery. Sformulowany z magiczna Pitera™ i tak dalej.

Brzmi jak krem CC, nieprawdaz? Luksusowy jak widac, ale nadal krem CC.
Nie dziwota wiec, ze babki nie wiedzialy co to.

So what we have here is this lovely red tube filled with lovely CC cream that also has sun protection properties, SPF 25 PA +++. Not the highest SPF, but not too shabby either.

The company touts the awesome care benefits of the cream. It moisturizes. It provides 12 hours of hydration. When used regularly, it improves the skin's clarity and overall appearance and hydration levels. It gives a radiant complexion. It provides skin tone control. Formulated with Pitera™. And so on...

Produkt jest cudownie lekki. Jest taki sobie troche bialawy, choc singapurski SK-II przedstawiciel nazwal go "bezowym". Na jego szczescie daltonizm nie jest bolesna choroba.

Rozprowadza sie bardzo gladko i cieniutko i nie ma wyczuwalnego zapachu. Mala ilosc wystarczy do pokrycia calej twarzy. Produkt jest bardzo wydajny, wiec to choc w czesci usprawiedliwia jego cene.
Choc ma tam ten filter, jak wiekszosc kosmetykow na dzien dzisiejszy, nie jest to jednak wystarczajaca ochrona przed sloncem. Zalecane jest aby uzywac osobny filtr o wyzszym SPF pod ten krem.

The product is wonderfully light-weight. It's slightly off-white in color, though an SK-II rep in Singapore called it "beige". Oh well, luckily for him/her, color blindness is not a painful affliction.

It applies beautifully smooth and thin and has no discernible scent. A small amount is enough to cover the entire face.
Though it offers some degree of sun protection, as is typical of makeup products nowadays, it's not enough to properly shield you from the sun. It's recommended to use a separate sunblock under this product.

Jako baza pod makijaz, jestesmy poinstruowane, aby uzywac go PO kremie (na dzien) i PO filtrze. I mozemy go sobie nosic "golo" bez niczego na wierzchu, lub nalozyc na niego podklad, puder, co kto lubi.

As it is a makeup base, we are advised to use it after moisturizer (cream) and sunblock, and either wear it alone, or follow up with foundation.

Ja nosilam go w obu wersjach.
Jako baze pod moja poduszke Hery (Hera cushion). Albo, tak jak dzis, solo, bez niczego na wierzchu.
Kiedy noszony jest solo, mozemy lepiej oberwowac jego efekty na twarzy.
Czy nawilzal?
Tak.
Czy nawilzenie trwalo przez 12 godzin?
Mozliwe, ze tak. Ale to zalezy od pory roku, klimatu, i oczywiscie rodzaju cery.
Dla kazdego rodzaju cery?
Ponoc tak. Na mojej suchej i wrazliwej skorze sprawdzil sie w porzadku.
Czy nadal cerze blasku?
Nie zauwazylam.
Czy poprawil przejrzystosc cery i jej nawilzenie uzywany dluzej niz 4 tygodnie?
W moim przypadku nie zauwazylam. Choc mysle, ze efekty bylyby widoczne na bardziej "zapuszczonej" cerze.

I wore it both ways.
I used it as a makeup base for my Hera cushion. Or like today, I am wearing it alone.
When wearing alone, we can observe its effects better.
Does it moisturize?
Yes, it does.
Does the hydration last for 12 hours?
More or less, it does. Though I'm sure it depends on the season and climate, not to mention skin type.
Does it work on all skin types?
On my dry and sensitive skin it worked just fine. No problem here.
Does it offer radiant complexion?
Not in my case. Or maybe I'm radiant enough already.
Does it improve skin's clarity and its hydration levels when used for longer than 4 weeks?
Nope. Not in my case. But maybe the results would be more visible on a different person.

Tak!!!
I teraz bede robic cos, czego nie robie zbyt czesto - bede chwalic kosmetyk marki SK-II.
Ten tutaj zawodnik jest swietnym primerem. Cudowna baza. Hahahaha!
Leciutki, mieciutki, dajacy oddychac, wygladzajacy linie, sprawiajacy, ze makijaz trzymal sie na buzi przez caly dzien. Co przy ponad 30 stopniach i prawie 100% wilgotnosci powietrza jest nie lada wyczynem.
Zero narzekania z mojej strony. Magia po prostu.
Na dodatek swietnie wspolpracowal z moja skora i nie spowodowal zadnych nieprzyjemnych niespodzianek. Zero wysypow, zero podraznien, zero nieprzyjemnosci. Nawet kiedy uzywany byl kazdego dnia. (Z dwudniowa przerwa na DiorSnow i KohGenDo, bo bylam znudzona).

When used with the Hera cushion, did it fulfill its makeup base promises?
Yes!!! Actually, to be honest, it was a wonderful makeup base / primer.
Light, breathable, softening the fine lines and helping my makeup stay in place for the entire day. Even in 30plus degree heat (Celsius, ladies, Celsius) and nearly 100% humidity. No complaints here. None at all. It worked its magic. It's very compatible to my skin and causes absolutely no breakouts and no problems. Even with daily use (with a two day break for DiorSnow and KohGenDo, because I was getting bored).

No wiec, co my tu mamy?
Mamy naprawde swietna baze.
Ale czy warta swojej ceny?
Przygladalam mu sie w sklepie tu u mnie, ale cena mnie troche odstraszala. 6000 jenow (plus VAT) piechota nie chodzi. Kupilam go wiec na lotnisku podczas wypadu do Seulu. Nie pamietam dokladnej ceny, cos jakby 46 lub 48 dolarow US.
I choc jestem z tego kosmetyku bardzo zadowolona, to wiem na pewno, ze nie kupie go ponownie.

Sa inne kremy CC i bazy (primery), ktore dzialaja rownie dobrze i nie kosztuja tyle co SK-II Clear Beauty Care and Control krem.

A really solid makeup primer.

But is it worth the price?
I bought mine duty free at the airport. I don't remember how much it was. Around 46 or 48 US dollars. And while I'm very happy with how it's turned out, I will not buy it again.
Why?
There are other "CC creams" and makeup bases out there that are equally good and a lot cheaper than SK-II Clear Beauty Care and Control cream.
